The horrifying shooting spree that shocked Cumbria will be relived on a television show next month — just one day before the 11th anniversary of the tragedy.

It will bring back a time many in Cumbria would prefer to forget, but never will.

However, Whitehaven businessman Gerard Richardson, who was a friend of murdered lawyer Kevin Commons, said while it would be sad for the relatives of those who died, this is a news story that will not go away.

“Look at how many documentaries there have been about the school shooting in Dunblane,” he said.

He added: “People here have good heads on their shoulders. They handled it well with the national press when it happened and when it was time for them to go, they were told.”

Ending with Bird’s suicide near Boot, he said it remains a national story.

The episode is one of a number of programmes, starting on May 31, in a series called Killer Britain with Dermot Murnaghan about some of the worst murders in the country.

Episode two, entitled ‘Cumbria Shooting/ Derrick Bird’ will be shown on Tuesday, June 1, at 9pm — just one day before the 11th anniversary of the shootings which left 12 people dead and 11 more injured.

Publicity for the episode says: “Dermot Murnaghan remembers the morning of June 2, 2010 when the news broke of a gunman on the loose in Cumbria, indiscriminately killing strangers.

“Along with former Met detective Clive Driscoll, Dermot looks back on the remarkable events of that day, and the huge police operation to bring vengeful loner Derrick Bird in.”

The other four cases featured in the series includes the tit-for-tat gangland feud that brought years of murder into the heart of an inner-city community.

The third looks at the violent murder of Jessica Patel, which husband Mitesh claimed was a burglary gone wrong.

Experts join Murnaghan to explore a tragic case of exploitation, bullying, and ultimately murder.in the case of Phillip Nicholson and Isabella Gossling.

The final in the series, shown over five nights. highlights the case of Harry Jarvis, the cheating husband who kept his mistress in the shed while plotting to murder his wife, Carol Jarvis.
