A COMMUNITY-SPIRITED Cockermouth man has been out and about cleaning up 18 town plaques.

In 1995 the Cockermouth and District Civic Trust decided that a waymarked Town Trail should be created and guide booklets made available to buy from the Tourist Information Centre.

This was duly done and numbered plaques were sited at various points of interest around the town.

Trust secretary John Dent said: "Time and weather had combined to result in the plaques looking decidedly old and faded.

"Committee member Brian Coley took on the task of refurbishing the 18 plaques and they are looking like new again to greet the visitors going round the Town Trail."

Copies of the latest version of the Town Trail are available at the Tourist Information Centre in the library.
