Plans are being put in place to install a new play park on a Whitehaven estate.

Bransty play park has stood empty for a number of years but now work is under way to create a space for children to enjoy again.

Joseph Ghayouba, the newly elected Copeland councillor for Whitehaven Central ward, is working alongside Emma Ralls, who runs her own wealth management business at Bransty, to bring a play park back to the estate.

It was part of Coun Ghayouba's election campaign and he now wants to see his pledge through.

He said: "We are trying to find the most appropriate place for the play park to be situated. Some people have expressed concerns about putting it behind the garages like last time.

"My job is to help the residents and direct them as to how we get that play park up and running.

"I've been speaking with people who got the Moor Row one up and running. We're in the process of setting up a residents' committee group in Bransty. Emma is really keen to get it up and running.

"We want people to come along. We're going to have our first meeting once we've got the bank account set up.

"Then we'll start tackling not just the play park, but other issues too. I want to be one of those councillors who is involved on the ward."

Coun Ghayouba said they will be able to look at funding options once the residents' group has been set up.

He believes they will need about £85,000 for the project.

Coun Ghayouba added: "The other issue is childhood obesity - you want kids out of the house and outside exercising and playing. You want somewhere local to the area."

Alternative locations that have been considered for the play park are on land at South View Road, where it was historically located ,and also on The Green.
