Cumbrian goalkeeper Dean Henderson is recovering from Covid-19, Manchester United have revealed.

The Old Trafford club confirmed the Whitehaven star is missing their training camp in Scotland after "recently" contracting the virus.

Man Utd say the 24-year-old is "still feeling the effects of the virus" after initially testing positive a few weeks ago.

The club say the ex-Carlisle United academy player is recovering "from prolonged fatigue after contracting a COVID-19 infection three weeks ago.

“He is expected to be training again soon," the club added.

The news follows Henderson's return from the hip injury that forced him to withdraw from England’s Euro 2020 squad.

The Whitehaven star, speaking in recent days, said the summer break had enabled him to “get his head right” as well as recover from the injury.

He is now looking ahead to a big 2021/22 season at Old Trafford, but his return to action is now delayed because of his Covid situation.

“I was devastated at the time when I had to pull away from the squad, but I had the injury from the Burnley game from last season [in April] and was really struggling,” Henderson said.

“I had a bad left hip and it needed to be addressed.

“I took a scan when I was with England.

“I tried to keep it quiet, because I wanted to be involved and not miss any games, but it’s something that I needed to get sorted.

“Coming back in early, getting everything right, having a break, getting my head right and coming back ready to go for this season…I’m looking forward to it.”

Henderson, 24, enjoyed a landmark season last term as he claimed the first-choice position from David De Gea in Manchester United’s Premier League side.

The former Carlisle United academy keeper - whose first-team progress at Old Trafford benefits the Blues financially - also won his first full England cap and was second-choice to Jordan Pickford at the Euros before he had to pull out of the squad.

Speaking on Man Utd’s website recently, Henderson says he is looking forward to playing in front of fans again after last season’s behind-closed-doors Covid campaign.

“It’s exciting,” he said. “Football’s not been the same without fans.

“For certain players it’s hard to play without fans, including myself. Games are never the same. A full house at Old Trafford…that’s what I’m hoping for.”

Henderson will be hoping to return to action as soon as possible with Man Utd's top-flight campaign starting against Leeds on August 14.

The Cumbrian has also welcomed the arrival of England team-mate Jadon Sancho to Old Trafford this summer.

“I’ve got a lot of time for Jadon,” he said of the ex-Borussia Dortmund star.

“I was speaking to him trying to get him to come to the club, but he didn’t need any persuading – he had it in his mind last summer.

“Hopefully he can bring his talent onto the pitch and show everyone what he can do.”
