CONCERNS have been raised about the annual fireworks held in Cockermouth - but town councillors agreed they were a big part of the town and should go ahead.

Coun Alan Tyson has resigned as safety officer. He shared his concerns about the event which has become increasingly popular over the years, attracting thousands of people from far and wide to Memorial Gardens.

"We have problems every year on the bridge," said Coun Tyson.

"Last year I spent the whole time trying to stem the flow of walkers. The river is fast flowing and several of us have suffered abuse by telling people to be careful. There's a lot to the job and I feel I'm too old to carry on."

He was thanked for all his hard work. Coun David Malloy said: "As a town council we should step up to the plate and all chip in and help, it's a lot for one man."

Coun Andy Semple said: "Alan should be thanked for everything he has done. I have always felt the town council did a great job of the fireworks and the Christmas lights. They are a big part of the town."

"When you hear all the kids screaming with delight it puts all the difficulties into perspective," said Coun Isobel Burns.
