Works to reinstate the famous cobble setts to the area around the Market Cross in Front Street are progressing well, according to report from Cumbria County Council.

The work to reinstate the Alston Front Street's identifying cobbled streets started on August 2, with a set date for the end of November.

Despite some dislike for the idea from local businesses, the overall view from the traders on Front Street were that it is a pain for customers to get to their shops, however it is necessary.

A Cumbria County Council spokesperson said: "Using stone from the nearby Alston Quarry, the team of specialist contractors from Cubby Construction are on schedule to complete the works by the end of November.

They added a message of gratitude for the residents and traders in Alston for enduring thus far: "We thank the local community for their continued patience and understanding whilst these works are completed, and would like to remind people that Alston remains very much ’open for business’ throughout the project, with plenty of car parking available close to the town centre."
