Caretaker boss Gavin Skelton has told Carlisle United’s players they are in charge of their own destiny as they seek a turnaround tomorrow night.

The struggling Blues head to Newport seeking a first goal in five matches.

A four-game losing run has United second bottom in League Two as they go to a ground where they haven’t won in seven visits.

It looks set to be a second game in temporary charge for Skelton as United continue their search for a long-term successor to Chris Beech.

The Cumbrian coach said the matter of restoring belief in front of goal is down to the players.

“I’ve said to the players, it’s their responsibility in terms of the confidence – who wants to grab it by the scruff of the neck, really be that one that smashes it in?," Skelton said.

“Things will seem better at that point and things will start dropping.

“Tranmere on Saturday were on a good run of form. Were they better than us? They looked composed and experienced – but because they had that belief they get an own-goal.”

Asked if he was worried by United’s six-hour goals shortage, Skelton said: “Of course it’s a worry. We haven’t scored in the last four. But I do believe – we’ve got enough forward players.

“Once we get one it’s amazing how they’ll start rolling in.”

Skelton has not been drawn on whether he could make any further selection changes at Rodney Parade, having made three for the 1-0 Tranmere defeat.

The caretaker, who is assisted by Eric Kinder, added: “We want energy in the team, and if that means changes, we’ll have a look.

“Some lads are chomping at the bit, and if they get an opportunity, great. If we go with a bit of consistency…that’s something I’ll chew on.”

While the attention of fans is on the manager search, as well as higher-level issues at Brunton Park, Skelton has spoken of the importance of his players focusing on the job in hand.

“Concentrate on the game, that’s the only thing that’s important,” he added.

“If they get affected by other stuff, that’s their responsibility as professional footballers.”
