A MAN remains in a 'critical but stable' condition in the RVI after an assault in Workington on New Year’s Day.

Police are continuing to investigate after officers were called at 8.52am on January 1 following concern for the welfare of two men at a property in William Street, Workington.

Two men were discovered with injuries.

One, aged 38, remains in a critical but stable condition at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle after suffering head injuries.

The other, aged 34, was discharged after being treated at the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven.

A Cumbria Police spokesman said: "Two men have been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent and attempted grievous bodily harm with intent and remanded in custody.

"But investigations continue and officers are keen to hear from anyone who can help the enquiry or anyone who witnessed anything suspicious in this area."
