A BMW driver has been banned from the roads after driving at speed while under the influence of alcohol.

Michael Emsley, 35, of High Street, Boroughbridge, York, pleaded guilty to driving a vehicle when alcohol level was above the limit.

He appeared at Workington Magistrates' Court on Monday.

The court heard that police had observed a red BMW driving at speed and narrowly avoiding several parked cars on Moorclose Road in Workington at about 2.50am on December 28.

The vehicle was stopped and when Emsley got out of the car, he was unsteady on his feet and slurring his words.

He was breathalysed and gave a reading of 72mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35mcg.

Emsley, who was unrepresented, told magistrates: "I was at a friend's house in Workington. I had an argument with one of his friends. I left the situation and made the stupid decision to drive. I didn't feel that drunk at the time but it could have turned out differently.

"I'm thankful that I'm here. I apologise to the court for using up their time."

Emsley was banned from driving for 20 months, to be reduced by 20 weeks, if he completes a drink driving rehabilitation course.

Magistrates fined him £369 and ordered him to pay £85 costs and a £37 victim surcharge.
