West Cumbria's first live escape room will be celebrating their fifth birthday this Saturday (April, 23).

Workington's Lakes Escapes Ltd, were teams up to six people have up to 60 minutes to solve puzzles and find clues to unlock the various rooms, will be offering a 25 per cent discount to mark the occasion.

Owner, Carol Watson, said: "It can be quite an expensive undertaking for a whole family, so we're offering the discounted rate to make it more easier on the pocket for more new people to come and try out our rooms."

Carol and her husband John started up the business after trying out an escape room on a family day out and got the idea in their heads to open their own.

"John's got the creative mind to come up with the weird and wonderful puzzles - they take a long time to create.

"At the moment we're on creating a new room which will replace one of oldest games which has been with us for five years.

"A lot of people in Cumbria still don't know what escape rooms are, so we're still getting many first-time customers through the door, which is great," she said.

Carol, who was previously a covert mystery shopper for 15 years, said it's made her aware on what it takes to provide great "customer service".

"It's not just about getting the money in and getting them out, it's about how welcome they feel when they are with us," she said.

The rooms, which also cater to workplace team-building outings, offer five rooms - a modern detective, Quest for the Throne, Casino Heist, Shipwreck Cove, Dr Frankenscraft's Monster, and their latest addition, The Diamond Mine.

The family-run business takes pride that everything from props and set design has been created by them "besides the fire alarm system" to create such an immersive experience.

"You're taking people away from the reality of life for 60 minutes, you've got to be immersed otherwise it doesn't work.

"The reality of it is very hard work but being able to create something from absolutely nothing to where we are now five years later, great customers and great reviews, it's what we want to build on," she said.
