An impressive and historic hotel is on its way to becoming Large Hotel of the Year.

The four-star Skiddaw Hotel situated in the centre of Keswick has been shortlisted for the Large Hotel of the Year award in the 2022 Cumbria Tourism Awards.

The Cumbria Tourism Awards celebrate the best of Cumbria’s vibrant tourism economy, highlighting businesses that provide the industry with exceptional facilities and outstanding service which truly put Cumbria on the map.

From hundreds of entries, the regional tourism board whittled them down to announce a shortlist of finalists, with the historic Skiddaw Hotel cementing its place in one of the award ceremony’s most distinguished judging categories.

The iconic town-centre hotel, which has dominated Keswick’s Market Square for over 150 years, has become a popular tourist hot-spot.

The Skiddaw Hotel, which has been part of the family-owned Lake District Hotels for 27 years, recently gained its fourth AA star after substantial financial investment.

The ground floor was refurbished and transformed into a modern area of a level that attracted the fourth star for excellence.

In addition to revealing a contemporary new look, the hotel received its first AA rosette after creating a brand new restaurant under the guidance of new head chef, Bobby Filingham, who successfully modernized the hotel’s seasonal menus. The rebranded restaurant is now known as Brasserie 31.

Director of Lake District Hotels, Dani Hope said “It’s wonderful to know that our fabulous Keswick town-centre hotel is getting the recognition it deserves. We invested so much of our time and resources into completely revamping the hotel and it is uplifting to know that the months of hard work and planning paid off.”

Cumbria Tourism has praised all shortlisted finalists for offering fantastic quality, service and care to visitors against a backdrop of one of the most challenging periods in the industry’s history.

All finalists now face another round of judging, with the winners of each category being officially announced at a black-tie celebration ceremony being held on Wednesday, July 6, at the Castle Green Hotel in Kendal.

The Cumbria Tourism Awards ceremony will be the first of its kind since 2018 as it makes a comeback after a three-year absence.

The evening will be hosted by Dave Guest who has spent almost 40 years with the BBC documenting the region’s most memorable moments.
