CARLISLE City Council leader John Mallinson launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Boris Johnson this morning after Labour comfortably captured Cumberland Council winning 30 seats out of 46.

Conservative John Mallinson was elected in Houghton and Irthington with 1024 votes.

He will continue to serve as leader of Carlisle City Council until the authority is abolished when Cumberland Council takes full control in April 2023.

However after witnessing a Tory rout at last night's Local Elections he blamed the humilating defeat squarely at the door of Number 10 Downing Street.

Cllr Mallinson questioned the Prime Minister's integrity and agreed when asked if it was time for Boris Johnson to resign.

He said: “I think it is not just Partygate, there is the integrity issue. Basically I just don’t feel people any longer have the confidence that the prime minister can be relied upon to tell the truth.”

The council leader also took a swipe at Environment Secretary George Eustice who called on families on the breadline to purchase value brand groceries.

Cllr Mallinson added: "I don’t think it was helping to get comments from people like George Eustice talking about people using value brands to ease their shopping bills. That just seems to have come over very patronising.”
