WHETHER you are finishing the Hadrian's Wall or just beginning, a 15th century guesthouse could be the perfect tranquil spot for you to catch some rest.

Couple Barry Maxey and Michelle Smith have been running the Wallsend Guest House at Bowness-on-Solway, which also offers five luxury glamping pods, since the outbreak of the pandemic.

The historical home and site has been gradually building its way towards bringing the home back to its former glory of 1922.

"It's a very undersold area of the Lakes, and it's always quite exciting to meet people who haven't necessarily been this part of Cumbria before.

"I think receiving positive feedback is the best part of the business, seeing people with smiles on their faces, when people arrive they may have an opinion but when they leave, it's great to see how that opinion changes.

"A smiley face and good review is what we aspire to," Barry said.

Whilst Covid-19 added to the uncertainty of taking over a business, Barry was thankful for the support they received to get to highly-rated premise under its new ownership.

"We were very supported by accountants, legal and finance people who let us get into the property during covid.

"We also undertook quite a big refurbishment of the guesthouse, using a number of local businesses, we're always very adamant on using local traders when we can and JJ Lattimer in Mealsgate - they were instrumental in making sure the project opened up in time," he said.

It's not just tourists who seek the staycation spot however.

"We've been very well supported from the local community, we do get a lot of people even regional to area staying over for a getaway, we even had farmers come stay from Kirkbride - only three miles away," he said.

The couple who live on site to ensure they provide a high level of 'attentive service' said they want to continue growing the business.

"We want the people who come to us have a good guest experience and see a side that makes them want to come back, and hopefully continue to be an ideal tourist destination," he said.
