RESIDENTS have said it is 'too little too late' after CCTV has been installed at empty shops after vandalism and break-ins.

CCTV cameras have been added to boarded-up shops after several spates of vandalism in Barrow town centre.

Lying empty, Debenhams, WH Smith and nearby shops in Portland Walk have been the target of vandals.

Now the shops have been tightly boarded-up to stop windows being smashed while CCTV in place warns potential vandals against damaging the units further.

Some stores have also been broken into.

Residents took to social media to share their views on the CCTV being installed.

Robert Sewell said: "Why didn't they install them before everything was destroyed."

Kelsia Birch said: "Too little too late, I've seen "youths" walking round town with their hoodies tied up on their faces, even wearing balaclava type headgear, they all wear the same black tracksuit pants and black tops/jackets - What good is CCTV going to do?"

Lorraine Benson said: "Bit like closing the stable door after the horse has bolted. Waste of money anyhow what will they do if they catch anyone?"

Amy Diane Richardson said: "It's a shame those shops had to close down n the town looks so empty now.

"Breaks my heart seeing all those shops empty after them being open for so long n those that closed after not being open long. Something needs to be done to help the shops in the town."

Andy Marriott said: "Why don’t people just not smash the place up?"

Robert Sewell said: "Why didn't they install them before everything was destroyed?"

Kerry Bagshawn said: "I walked past there last week and was so surprised at the number of closed shops."

Samantha Arts said: "Too late now for the cameras, all the shops are smashed I walk past every morning."
