A Maryport charity which supports people with ‘hidden disabilities’ is in the running for a national award.

Owl Blue has reached the final of this year’s National Diversity Awards in the category of ‘Community Organisation - Disability’.

"These are the largest diversity awards in the UK and Owl Blue are the only Cumbrian organisation to be shortlisted in any category," said fundraising manager Stuart McDougall.

"We are overwhelmed and honoured, also delighted to be flying the flag for the county."

Stuart founded Owl Blue 13 years ago and is the only employee. He is supported by volunteers and trustees.

Funds are raised through the charity's Maryport shop.

Owl Blue works with the families of people with hidden disabilities and those who share their lives.

These disabilities include autism and co-occurring conditions such as learning disabilities and mental health problems, PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance), ADHD and the deaf.

The organisation runs courses and seminars for individuals and companies working with people with these disabilities. And offers one-to-one support to people affected.

"A lot of what we have done over the past few years is to create an understanding and acceptance around neurodiversity, which will then lead to inclusion," said Stuart.

"We are not looking at ways to fit a neurodivergent person in to society but how society can make small changes to fit in around them."

The finals of the awards, which are sponsored by ITV news, are being held at the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral on Friday, September 16.

"There are eight organisations shortlisted in our category and a total of 14 categories, with lots of big names," said Stuart.

"Winning last year’s Diverse Cumbria award was a fantastic achievement and although Owl Blue was not started with the aim of winning awards, for us now to be recognised at a national level is something special.

"It's great to see what we have achieved."
