THE NEW area of Cumberland is set to benefit from £10,585,623 over three years out of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

The cash, which is set to be shared out to regions across the country, is the domestic replacement to EU funding post-Brexit.

Speaking at Cumbria County Council’s Local Committee for Allerdale last week, Aarea Manager Lizzy Shaw explained the process for the cash injection.

“It’s just over £10 million for three years for the whole Cumberland area.

“Just under £4 million is allocated to Allerdale. The team supported a number of organisations in putting in expressions of interest for that money in the Allerdale area, they are just waiting now.

“The councils need to come up with a plan that they will submit to Government and hopefully we can start to draw down some money from October.”

Every region of the UK will be allocated a share for the 2022-23, 2023- 24 and 2024-25 financial years.

2022-23 will see £400 million handed-out, year two will see £700 million and £1.5 billion in year three.

£4.1 million is set to enter Carlisle from the Government’s fund, the city council hosted a meeting in June giving groups the opportunity to pitch for a share of the funding.

Successful groups will be included in the city’s investment plan.

One of the groups pitching their project to partners for potential investment was the Friends of Carlisle Victorian and Turkish Baths.

Stakeholders explained their vision for the regeneration of the 138 year-old wellbeing centre to the council at the meeting last month, hoping to be one of those successful in drawing down the funding.
