A TEENAGER was rescued from Workington harbour over the weekend after he was seen 'clinging to a handrail in difficulty'.

Maryport Coastguard Rescue Team and Workington Lifeboat were called out to Workington harbour late on Saturday afternoon, July 17.

A spokesman said: "The coordination centre had received a 999 call reporting a teenager having entered the water after a football and was clinging to a handrail in difficulty.

"Thankfully they managed to self recover as assets were arriving. The coordination centre was able to stand down the lifeboat before launch, and coastguard officers arrived on scene to offer safety advice to the group.

"With the weather still heating up and the summer months ahead, please be aware of the hazards at the coast, especially #coldwatershock.

"We want everyone to enjoy the coast and to go home safe to their loved ones with fond memories of their day at the coast."
