Cornwall is facing severe storms as the Met Office upgrade its weather warning from yellow to amber.

After heatwaves ravaged the nation, bringing with them drought and hosepipe bans, most people have been hoping for a drop or two of rain – but be careful what you wish for.

The amber alert says thunderstorms and heavy showers are likely to cause travel disruption and flooding in some places.

Amber weather warning for storms in Cornwall

The amber weather warning will remain in place until 8pm this evening and a second yellow weather warning, covering the entire country, is also in place until midnight on Tuesday.

More of the same is predicted for the south of the country on Wednesday with a warning in place from 9am until midnight.

The alert states: "While some places will stay dry, others are likely to see thunderstorms with torrential rain during Wednesday, bringing possible disruption."

What to expect from an amber weather warning

Here's what the Met Office say people should expect from an amber weather warning for thunderstorms.

  • Flooding of homes and businesses is likely and could happen quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
  • Fast flowing or deep floodwater is likely, causing danger to life
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, delays and some cancellations to train and bus services are likely
  • Spray and sudden flooding probably leading to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • Some communities likely to become cut off if roads flood
  • Power cuts likely to occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
