A NEW town councillor has said that despite his best efforts the Harrington Marina Day will not be brought back this year - after it's cancellation by Workington Town Council last month.

Paul Larkin, Conservative, was elected to the Harrington ward on Workington Town Council on August 4, with 273 votes.

On his election he pledged to try and do everything to get the Harrington Marina Day, which was planned for this month, back up and running.

However, after attempts during his first week, Mr Larkin has had to accept the event will not go ahead this year.

In a post on a socail media group for Harrington, Mr Larkin said: "As your newest town councillor I have spent the past week trying to resurrect the Harrington marina day unfortunately all the permits, public liability insurance and funding have all been cancelled.

"To reinstate all this takes 29+ days this will, unfortunately take it into the beginning of Autumn when the weather will become unsuitable for holding the event and therefore the Harrington marina will not be taking place this year.

"I do however plan to bring back the event in 2023, bigger and better."

Mr Larkin also encouraged people to get in touch with him if they wished to input into the day as he would like it to be 'a real community event."

At the start of the month, Workington Town Council announced it would not be able to support Harrington Marina Day, saying the event “had not been progressed” by the organiser.

It led to a petition being launched by Workington MP Mark Jenkinson, as well as argument as to who was to blame for the cancellation at a town council meeting earlier this month.

At the time Workington Town Council Clerk Catherine Gourley said: "“The people who were supposed to be doing it, aren’t doing it. We said we’d support them to do it. They haven’t done anything.

The organiser was named in a council meeting as former Mayor of Workington Herbert Briggs- who last week denied this claim in a letter to the Times and Star.
