READERS responded to a map of where sewage was released in Cumbria over the last 48 hours.

The map was created by Surfers Against Sewage to show all the discharge points across the country, including Cumbria.

There are five Cumbria locations showing as polluted: Walney West Shore, Walney Biggar Bank and Walney Sandy Gap.

The warning for West Shore and Sandy Gap reads: “Sewer overflows from nearby Barrow-in-Furness to the northeast and the Duddon River and estuary to the north may affect bathing water quality here.”

The Biggar Bank warning adds: “There is a large BAE Systems shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness and the company is investigating a way to separate clean rainwater from the foul water to improve water quality.”

More warnings are present further north, in Allonby South and near Crosscanonby.

This warning reads: “Pollution Alert: Storm sewage has been discharged from a sewer overflow in this location within the past 48 hours.

"The River Ellen flowing south of the bathing water, as well as the Allonby Beck to the north can be a source of reduced water quality, particularly after heavy rainfall. Allonby Sewage treatment Works discharges into Allonby Bay.”

Therese Assouad called out the local MP for Barrow Simon Fell, saying: "It is disgusting...and Fell's support for this is too." This is in reference to Simon Fell voting against an amendment by the Lords to the Environment Bill last year that would have placed legal duties on companies to reduce discharges.

Victoria Georgina Fryer agreed with Therese: "Simon Fell voted to allow this. It's absolutely grim."

Paul Griffiths said: "Not too long ago our MP Simon Fell voted to allow water companies the option to discharge raw sewage into the sea.

"Barrow beaches are now listed as having pollution warnings in place." Nicola Bland replied: "That's disgusting," to his comment.

Danni Gee said: "Thank the CON-servatives for this, and many other dumpster fire ideas."

Angela Butcher compared the discharge to fines that farmers receive for pollution: "They fine farmers heavily if they pollute water courses seems to me its a case of do as I say not as I do, disgusting."
