Hundreds of children flocked to a revamped beach front play area to celebrate its reopening.

The tired play equipment at Seascale was ripped out in January and since then work has been ongoing to install the new play area – which cost £130,000.

And it's been a huge community effort to get the area open.

A dedicated team of volunteers has helped each step of the way – even laying out 1,000 metres of turf in the final stages.

Lizzie Mawson, chairwoman of the Seascale Community Beach Park Project, said she was overwhelmed by the amount of support.

"It was really emotional when we first saw the children on the equipment, to know that we made it happen," said Lizzie.

"The committee has really put their heart and soul into it – and I have the blisters to show!

"It has been a whole community effort."

The turf was laid down during the area's hot weather and was watered by Sellafield firefighters due to the lack of rain.

And staff at the village's golf club provided tools to lay the turf, as well as their expertise.

Lizzie paid a special mention to the landscape architect Sarah Autie, who she said worked extremely hard on the project.

Lizzie said hundreds of children descended on the play park during last week's school holidays.

"I have never seen Seascale as busy in my life. I've had people coming up to me to say how great it is," she added.

"When I see how well Seascale is doing, it makes me really proud."

The new equipment was made and shipped from Germany and is expected to last around 30 years.

The money for the revamp was raised as a charity, and the responsibility for the play area will now be handed over to the parish council.

A grand opening and celebration has been planned for June 30.

Grant funding was secured from the Copeland Community Fund, Community Choices, The Hadfield Trust, The Sir John Fisher Foundation, Persimmon Community Champions, The Coop Community Fund, LLWR, CN Group and Seascale Parish Council.
