It's a big ask to pick one standout rider from arguably Workington Comets’ best ever side after this unforgettable season but that is what fans are tasked with ahead of the club’s end-of-season awards.

Who deserves to take the Times & Star/News & Star Rider of the Year gong in a campaign of remarkable performances?

RENE BACH: Well-liked by fans having put in years of service for the club, Bach is an entertaining racer who, at his best, can mix it with anyone in the league. It would be fitting for him to lead Workington to their first league title, having come close with the 2012 Comets side.

RASMUS JENSEN: Some eyebrows might have been raised when Jensen returned to Workington after a year out of British speedway but the decision has been more than vindicated by the Dane’s sensational form. An exciting rider who can make a blistering start or pick his way through the pack from the back, nobody will doubt him again.

TY PROCTOR: Last year’s Rider of the Year has enjoyed another great season at Workington with consistent scores and the honour of being captain. Proctor almost clinched the Pairs title with Nicolai Klindt and will be disappointed he is unable to play his part in the finals.

DAN BEWLEY: Perhaps the only disappointment of this season is that Dan Bewley, a rising star and showman on the track, has not been able to play the part he deserves in these finals. Bewley has represented his local side with electrifying performances home and away in a season sadly cut short by injury.

NICOLAI KLINDT: A third Dane and another signing which was seen as underwhelming by fans of other clubs before the season, Klindt has shown his experience and quality as a team player who can be explosive away from the tapes. He has formed a formidable partnership with Jensen, particularly at Derwent Park.

MASON CAMPTON: A firm fan favourite, the likeable Australian has been a reliable presence in the main body of the team and at reserve. Campton’s passion for the club is obvious and he has taken on increased responsibility both as captain when Proctor has been absent and as a partner for the inexperienced Kyle Bickley while he learned the ropes.

KYLE BICKLEY: It is easy to forget that Bickley is 16 years old and riding at this level for the first time when you see how he is ending his debut season as a Comet.

It took the youngster time to find his feet but that first win at Derwent Park sent his confidence soaring and his performances in the latter stages of the season have been important to the club’s success.
