Workington Reds chairman John Mackay is urging everyone to rally round the club as they look to lift the gloom with a win on the road at Nantwich tomorrow.

Reds are currently sat one place off the bottom of the Northern Premier League after a poor run of form. But Mackay is urging everyone to back the team as they look to try and build confidence and then start to climb back up the table.

“Everyone has to rally round and support the management and the team,” said Mackay. “It is not the best of times at the club at the moment but there are things to be positive about like the new stadium and everything that goes with it.

“Teams are up and down and we have had some great times under the two lads and hopefully we can turn the corner sooner rather than later and get those times back.

“We have to be patient and not have a reaction to a problem that doesn’t exist. The players lack a bit of confidence but a win could make all the difference.”

Reds don’t have an easy ask tomorrow as they head to a Nantwich side, fourth in the table but Mackay says his side can up their game against tough opponents.

He added: “Sometimes playing against better teams we can relax a little and Nantwich might think as we are near the bottom that we will be a pushover. But there are no easy games in this league.

“All the games we have played so far have been really close, we are not getting beat 5-0. The number of times teams have said to us ‘why are you near the bottom of the league when you are playing the football you are playing’.

“Our biggest problem is we are not taking our chances. We just need one or two to start going in and the confidence will be back.”

And Mackay praised their travelling fans adding: “It is always great to see them. It is easy to support a winning team but to follow a team when they are struggling – that’s when we find out the true supporters who are with us through thick and thin.”
