Scott Rooke is the latest player to commit his future to Workington Town - giving them a welcome boost ahead of Sunday's promotion showdown with Bradford.

The young winger has signed a new two-year contract at the Derwent Park side after impressing coach Leon Pryce this term.

And he played his part last weekend to help Town reach the Betfred League One play-off final, as they beat Doncaster 30-18 in the play-off semi-final.

Town's director of rugby Les Ashe was delighted to keep the hard-working three-quarter at the club.

He said: "It's great news to get Scott signed up for the next two years.

"He is very passionate about playing for Town and after a very serious injury in pre-season, he’s shown remarkable tenacity to recover, get fit and back playing and to score some crucial tries at the latter end of the season."

Rooke was knocked unconscious during the Ike Southward Memorial Trophy derby with Whitehaven back in February.

But after a spell in Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary, he continued his recovery at home and was back playing for the club later in April after a stunning comeback.

"His work rate and speed is there for everyone to see and he certainly knows where the try line is," added Ashe.

"He’s still young and developing as a professional rugby player but he’s exactly the kind of skilful, flexible and passionate player we want at Town and we all look forward to seeing him progress in the blue and white."

Rooke says he is always learning more from the more experienced stars and is keen to continue.

He said: "I'm really happy to have signed for the next two years. I love playing for Town and I'm learning a lot from the great players we have at the club.

"We've had a great season this year with more to do. I look forward to putting on the Town shirt next year."

After spells with Workington Zebras and Aspatria in rugby union and both Seaton and Hensingham playing rugby league, the full-back/winger made the step up to League 1 with Town last year.

An impressive debut for his hometown club last season led him to be re-signed for this year.

He hit the headlines in 2016 when he broke two records in Workington Zebras’ win over Windermere, becoming the first player to ever score six tries in one game and breaking his own marker for most points in a game with 46.

He has also represented his county in both codes and played for England Colleges.
