Workington Reds are out of the Integro League Cup thanks to a first half injury time winner from visitors Prescot Cables.

Reds fielded a youthful side last night and it looked as though it would pay off as they started brightly and picked up an early goal.

But their visitors hit back shortly after and then picked up what was to be the winner in added time before the break and Prescot held out to move on in the cup.

Student Tom Fagan, from Southport but studying in Carlisle, began the game at right back, looking to impress the Reds bosses as he joined the club this week.

And it was another new face Kieran Maguire, who signed in the close season, that opened the scoring with a great effort from 30-yards out in just the seventh minute.

Both sides were having to contend with sweeping wind and rain across Borough Park and it nearly led to a second goal for Reds.

Lewis Casson, in goal for Reds, lofted the ball upfield, the wind took hold of it and the Prescot keeper was back-peddling to ensure it didn't land in his net.

Prescot came more into the game and a good cross saw Chris Almond rise to head home past Casson to equalise for the visitors.

Pushing forward, Max Brown hammered a shot that was heading for the goal until Cables keeper Kyle Haslam tipped it over the bar.

Both sides had their chances but it looked as though the half would end all square but then into injury time, Prescot sub Matt Hamilton thundered a shot into the back of the net for the visitors to take the lead.

Reds looked brighter as the second half opened and they attacked with vigour, Max Brown unlucky to be tackled in the box just as he turned to take a shot.

Prescot looked to put the game to bed when Hamilton met a good cross with his head. It was left to Casson to pull off a good block and keep his side in the game.

Sub Jaic Miller tried his luck from the edge of the area when a corner was cleared but the shot went wide as Reds looked to get back into this game.

Then James Edgar put in a superb cross across the face of the goal but neither of the two chasing attackers could get to the ball for Prescot.

In the end Prescot did enough to hang on and take the win and Reds turn their attentions back to the FA Cup on Saturday and their trip to Knaresborough.
