Workington Town sealed a crucial victory in their final home game of the season over London Skolars and clinched a play-off place to boot.

In the end it was a good defensive stint from the home side that clinched them the game, with Skolars only getting points on the board from a dubious penalty try incident.

Town did enough to see them win the encounter 38-6 with both wingers Tyllar Mellor and Scott Rooke bagging braces.

Town looked to assert some early pressure as they drove forward following a penalty and the final ball was kicked towards the post by Jamie Doran.

It took a bounce off the post and Town were able to wrap up the Skolars man over the line to force a drop-out.

But Town could not make the extra set count, although Sean Penkywicz went close, being held up over the line. However, Carl Forber was wrapped up on the last and the ball was turned over.

And London showed they mean business moments later as Michael Bishay kicked early in the tackle count and his quick thinking earned them ground with a 40/20.

Daymeric Pelo was taking some stopping early in the game but then Scott Rooke proved Town's saviour as he out-leaped the Skolars attackers and raced 30-metres out of the danger zone.

There were 12 minutes on the clock when Town's pressure paid off and good hands out to the left hand side saw Tyllar Mellor dive in at the corner flag.

The touchline conversion from Carl Forber was just short but Town now had their tails up.

Four minutes later as Town pressed the line again, Penkywicz popped up a nice pass for Tyler Dickinson to crash over from short range near the posts, leaving an easy two-pointer for Forber.

A loose pass from the visitors gave Workington chance to extend their lead. Mellor was quickest to react to the loose ball and he raced nearly the full length of the field to touch down, but again the conversion was missed.

Fuifui MoiMoi entered the field of play and after an early bruising encounter he thought he had scored between the posts but the play was pulled back for a forward pass.

Skolars were down to 12-men when Matt Fleming was sent to cool his heels in the sin bin for a professional foul but the visitors probably had one of their best spells of the game.

Town had to weather four consecutive sets on their own line showing some superb defence to keep the visitors out.

The London side were again reduced to 12-men with two minutes of the half remaining when Miles Greenhalgh was shown a yellow card.

But the home side could not make the penalty pay and the half ended with Town in the ascendancy 14-0.

Into the second half and a perfectly weighted kick from the boot of Doran saw Rooke win the race to the touchline and it popped up nicely for him to score, with Forber converting from the touchline to rack up the 20-point mark.

Confusion then reigned at Derwent Park as Matt Fleming looked to touch down in the corner for Skolars but it seemed that some last ditch tacking had saved Town.

But the referee after consulting his touch judge, awarded a penalty try, which was then converted in front of the posts.

It was up to Town to regroup and they did with Ollie Wilkes bursting through the tackle to go over the line, with Forber adding the extras.

The ref handed out his third yellow card of the afternoon to Skolars shortly after, Billy Driver leaving the field for 10 minutes for dissent.

Rooke bagged his second of the afternoon getting onto the end of another good kick to go over in the corner, this time Forber was the provider and then he also went on to convert.

An incident that saw Wilkes leave the field with a knock to the head went on report with 10 minutes remaining as Town looked to wrap up the game.

Rooke showed another pair of clean heels down the touchline before getting the ball infield to Forrester but he was wrapped up before the line as Town then had to put the pressure on to force a drop-out.

The points were sealed when FuiFui MoiMoi crashed over from a couple of yards out with Forber converting to take the score out to 38-6 with seven minutes remaining.

Town could have widened the gap but Kurt Maudling lost the ball with the try line beckoning and Skolars raced back upfield for a final fling.

They could not find the line and the final score stayed at 38-6 to hand Town the crucial league points in the play-off race.
