Bradford Bulls have handed over a cheque for more than £830 to the Whitehaven club as a show of support to their financial battle.

The Bulls have been through torrid times themselves with their own financial crisis contributing to their fall from the Super League to League One.

At Sunday’s game with Haven at Odsal Stadium, the Bradford Bulls Supporters Group handed over the cheque for £839.30 to the Whitehaven officials who attended the game.

Whitehaven’s general manager Amanda Hewer said: “Everyone at the club would like to thank Dave Hicks and his Bradford Supporters Group for their very generous donations. We really appreciate their support in what are very difficult times for the club.”

The club will be holding a key meeting on Friday to discuss the way forward and how it can be reorganised over the next few weeks.

“The financial situation is obviously a concern but it hasn’t got marginally better or marginally worse and we will be looking at how best to tackle the situation,” said chairman Tommy Todd.

He also praised the efforts of the Bradford supporters in contributing to Whitehaven’s coffer with their recent donation.

“I think it shows again the camaraderie that exists within the rugby league family and that we are all in this together. It was very good of them and we certainly enjoyed our day with them – apart from the result of course,” said Todd.

Bradford won the game 46-0 to stay top of the pile, and in a direct fight with York City Knights to earn the automatic right to promotion.

Whitehaven face the prospect of travelling to York in their final League One fixture of the season in September.

Whitehaven are on the road this weekend to Oldham who have the best points differential of the four teams vying for a promotion play-off place.

But the Roughyeds still have to play joint leaders Bradford (home) and York (away) as well as Newcastle Thunder (away), Coventry Bears (home) and London Skolars (away).

Oldham coach Scott Naylor has already labelled Sunday’s clash as “a must-win game” and says: “We can’t afford to lose many more and this one is a four-pointer.”

The Roughyeds are asking fans to turn up in numbers as strong home support on a compact little ground can be their 18th man.

They reported no new injuries after the win at Hemel and stressed that Danny Langtree’s withdrawal at half-time with a sore rib was merely precautionary.
