Ben Stokes has been selected in England’s line-up for the opening Test against India.

All-rounder Stokes, from Cockermouth, is included in the side for the match at Edgbaston which starts today, but the 27-year-old will miss the second Test at Lord’s, which gets under way on August 9, as his trial for affray begins on Monday.

Adil Rashid is the lone spinner in the England team, while skipper Joe Root has confirmed Jos Buttler will be his deputy.

“For this series, Jos is going to be vice-captain,” Root said.

“He’s obviously vice-captain of the white-ball side; he thinks extremely well about the game, and has a huge amount of respect within the dressing-room.

“Looking at very long-term, five to 10 years, I see him as someone who can really drive this team forward.”
