West Cumbria has gained a world champion.

Rachael Vatter, of Eaglesfield, was selected with her dad Ian to represent Great Britain at the Multisport World Championships Festival in Denmark.

And her prowess at running and swimming saw her claim a world champion title.

Rachael warmed up for her championship win by competing in the sprint duathlon in the 20-24 age group, coming fourth and earning the family bragging rights by notching a time a minute faster than her dad’s.

Ian, who was competing for GB for the third time, took part in the sprint duathlon in the 55-59 age group and finished respectably in the middle of the field.

Both had run personal best times in the 5km and were very pleased with their results but Rachael wasn’t content to just stop there.

Four days later she competed in the Aquathlon World Championships, again in the 20-24 age group, and this time she proved to be the cream of the crop.

A gruelling 1km swim saw her dodging the jellyfish in the harbour followed by a 5km run and Rachael exited the water first in her age group before extending her lead in the run.

Her stunning performance earned her a gold medal and made her the female Aquathlon world champion in her age group.
