All-rounder Ben Stokes has been named in England’s 13-man squad for the first Test against India.

Stokes, from Cockermouth, is expected to play in the side even though the game at Edgbaston could finish 24 hours before the start of his court case.

But the major talking point is the inclusion of Adil Rashid despite his decision to quit all first-class cricket while he prepares for next year’s home World Cup.

“Clearly, the one-off circumstances around Adil’s return to the Test squad are unusual,” national selector Ed Smith said.

“However, the selection panel was unanimous in believing that Adil should be selected in England’s squad.”
