Whitehaven player-coach Carl Forster says he never ceases to be amazed by what his players constantly achieve.

Despite all the concerns over the club’s financial situation, the failed takeover and the small size of the squad, Sunday’s last-gasp win over Workington Town pushed them back into the League One play-off positions.

“It’s been a remarkable effort under the circumstances and I think it’s down to the spirit that we have in the squad. They never know when they are beaten," said Forster.

“The other thing about it is, I don’t think we have played consistently well over the 80 minutes, apart from two or three matches.

“If we could do that in every game, I would fancy our chances against anybody in our league and we would be higher than we are currently in fifth.”

Whitehaven had looked down and out at Derwent Park when they went 10 points behind with just seven minutes left and no further options from the bench.

So to come back from that position and score twice in the last three minutes, putting over a conversion after the hooter to win it, was quite a remarkable effort.

“And don’t forget that was the second time we’ve done that to Town this season,” added Forster.

Forster hopes that Town, as well as Haven, finish in a play-off berth and perhaps set-up a third and final meeting for the season.

"I genuinely hope we both make the play-offs because west Cumbria deserves two successful clubs,” he said.

Both are level on points but Town have the better points differential as they prepare for a fortnight in which both have sound prospects of recording back-to-back wins.

Town have two successive visits to Wales to play struggling West Wales Raiders, and then a stiffer test at North Wales Crusaders.

At the same time Haven have two games at the Recreation Ground – London Skolars on Sunday and Newcastle Thunder a week later.
