Egremont Rangers won a tough derby at Wath Brow to stay second in the National Conference Premier Division.

Hornets left themselves too much to do in the second half after turning round 18-4 behind, having conceded three converted tries.

Although they responded well and closed the gap to just two points, it was the Rangers who scored the last try of the game to clinch the points.

Wath Brow had actually taken the lead on 21 minutes with an unconverted try from Curtis Teare but the second quarter clearly belonged to Egremont.

Matty Henson nipped over for two tries and Marcus O’Brien scored the third, with all of them converted by Matty Bewsher.

Words were clearly said at half-time as Hornets came out suitably fired-up and there were tries for Callum Farrer and Peter Caddy, both improved by Cole Walker-Taylor.

At that point, it could have gone either way, and there were some close calls at both ends, but on 69 minutes, Brad Long scored the decisive try for Egremont which Bewsher converted.

Kells came back from west Yorkshire with a point after a hard-fought 14-14 draw with Underbank Rangers.

It was their second draw of the season and keeps them solidly mid-table.

There was a dramatic finish to the game as Underbank thought they had won it with a 78th-minute penalty from Richard Pogson but, in the dying seconds, Grant Gainford held his nerve to put over the equalising penalty for Kells.

Kells had been the first to score on five minutes when Harry Watson got over, but ten minutes later the hosts were level when Alex Chatterton also scored an unconverted try.

Jordan Herve restored Kells' lead with the third try of the game which enabled the west Cumbrians to turn round with an 8-4 advantage.

That didn’t last long, though, for within a minute of the restart, Underbank got over through Owen Restall and Pogson landed the game’s first conversion.

Ross Gainford then put over two penalties, and Pogson nailed one, to leave the sides all square ahead of their dramatic late penalty shoot-out which ended level.
