Luke Greenbank has got a taste for world-class swimming at these Commonwealth Games and insists he’s going to do everything he can to stay at the table.

The 20-year-old earned his first senior medal last night, leading off England’s 4 x 100m medley relay team as they were narrowly pipped to gold by Australia.

Add to that a personal best in the 100m backstroke and marked improvements in the 200m and you’ll agree Greenbank’s stock has risen here on the Gold Coast.

And the Cockermouth swimmer admits his performances at the Optus Aquatic Centre has fuelled his desire to become a mainstay of the British swimming squad.

“It’s my first senior international medal so I’m really, really pleased with that,” he said.

“It was really good to lead off, a new experience for me so, hopefully, I can build on that in the future and become a regular part of that team and get that time down to the best in the world.

“We’ve got a lot of people coming through and Chris [Walker-Hebborn] is still producing really good times, so it gives me a lot of confidence.

"People are pushing me as well but, hopefully, I can bring the time down more and get that gold in Tokyo.

“It’s been a really good meet for me, I PB’d in the 100m backstroke.

"I’ve been the fastest I’ve been for a long time in the 200m, so I can really take away positive there and everything is moving in the right direction.”

Another swimmer to emerge from these Games with nothing but optimism was Jacob Leach, who set a new personal best time of 1:06.59 to finish fifth in the S9 100m backstroke final.

And Leach believes his debut performance will have certainly got a few people talking.

“I saw 1:07.8 in the morning and 1:06.5 there, so I’m happy with that, that’s amazing. My best swim yet,” he said.

“In the morning, I went out trying to keep up with the Australians but, in the final, I just focused on myself, made sure I got my stroke rate right and it all came together in the end.

“It’s a great atmosphere, it gives you that boost to go further and I’m so pleased with myself.

"It’s my debut so it’s been a great experience, I’ve made a name for myself now so I’ll continue to swim as hard as I can.”

Longtown's Lauren Smith is in mixed doubles action today with Marcus Ellis - the pair face a home nations clash with Scotland pair Martin Campbell and Julie MacPherson for a place in the Round of 16.
