Swimming is all about routine and doing the same thing over and over until you get it right.

Cockermouth’s Luke Greenbank has found one habit he wants to get out of – and fast.

The 20-year-old followed up his fourth place in the 100m backstroke at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast with the identical result over 200m.

Just to rub salt into the wounds, he finished behind a trio of Australians as the host nation dominated the early races in the pool on Monday, and while his time of 1:57.43 was not far off his best, he admitted there was a little disappointment at just missing out on the medals once more.

He said: “It’s a little bit frustrating.

"Fourth is always a difficult place, especially [because] I was hoping to get a medal and stop the Aussies getting a one-two-three.

“But it’s their environment, and I’m not as used to swimming outside. So to go that quick, I’m quite pleased with.

"I’ll look at my race and see what I can work on but, overall, I’m quite pleased.

“I could definitely hear the crowd on that last length, so I knew at least one or two of them were there.

"It’s about half a second off my PB but the fastest I’ve been in the last two years so I’ll definitely take that and I’m moving in the right direction.

“I tend to swim well towards the end of the season so I’ll take that.”

That swim wrapped up Greenbank’s individual exertions in the pool, but he will back in action this evening in the 4x100m medley relay.

England’s relay team enter the competition one of the favourites thanks to the presence of Olympic champion Adam Peaty on the breaststroke leg.

And while hosts Australia will be tough to beat, Greenbank is planning to do everything he can to put Peaty in the best possible position to set up and English win.

He added: “I want to try to improve on the hundred time I set earlier in the week to put Adam in a good position to storm past the Aussies on that breaststroke.

“It will be a close one, and I wouldn’t like to call but it should be a good race.”
