England skipper Joe Root has refused to guarantee Cumbrian Ben Stokes will be reinstated as Test vice-captain.

Stokes' return after a five-month international absence has brought immediate dividends at the start of the One-Day International Series against New Zealand.

The Cockermouth man, 26, put in a man-of-the-match performance in England's six-wicket success on Wednesday before stressing it's a "privilege" to represent the country.

Echoing similar sentiments, Root spelled out the all-rounder's feelings are plain for all to see whenever he pulls on the shirt.

He said: "He loves playing for England, and you can see that in the way he plays.

"He leaves nothing out there on the field. He's really dedicated to this sport."

England will face the Kiwis in two Tests, once this five-match ODI series is completed, with the third game of the series taking place tomorrow morning at Wellington's Westpac Stadium (1am start).

But Root isn't ready to name his Test deputy yet.

"That's a decision we've not agreed yet," he admitted.

"Trevor [Bayliss, head coach] and I will get together but that's not been discussed."
