“For long spells of the game we were certainly their equals, matching them in every department,” said Hewer.
“The fact that we were twice in the lead says a lot about the lads’ performance in the first half.
“We honestly didn’t know what to expect coming down here. There is a great set-up in Coventry and the club made us really welcome.
“It was a great experience for all of us, players, coaches and supporters.
“What the difference was, was speed. They were faster than us, and fitter, as I guess you would expect from a semi-pro side."
“Eventually, they wore us down. They have a powerful pack which did the damage and then some good ball players and kickers," he added.
“And it was their kicking game which won it for them in the end, plus a few mistakes on our behalf, but you can't blame anyone for that.
“I have to say our heads did go down at one stage and that was when the damage was done.
“Coventry were always able to come back and not surprisingly they won.”
But Hewer thought the final score was a bit unfair on his travelling west Cumbrians.
He added: “As for the scoreline, I still think that flatters them, but I would say that wouldn’t I?
“So to sum up it was a great experience and some of the lads like Kieran [Ritchie] and Greg [Bedford] really had them worried and showed that they can compete at this much higher level.
“We’ve learnt a lot, had a great day, and seen how the game is taking root in the Midlands.
“And we have to wish the Bears all the best for the next round and for the future generally.”
