Workington Town will welcome Huddersfield Giants for a pre-season friendly in January.

The club announced their first pre-season workout with the Super League outfit due to head to Derwent Park on January 20.

Both teams will use it as a warm-up for their respective seasons, as Workington look to take another tilt at promotion from League One.

New Town chairman Les Smallwood said he was delighted that the Giants would return to take on Workington, building on their already strong relationship.

“We have a fantastic relationship with Huddersfield Giants and one that we are keen to continue,” said Smallwood.

“Our board works closely with them on a number of fronts and the relationship has flourished over the last season.

“Simon Woolford is looking to use the friendly to assess who will be in his 19 for his first league game in early February.

“And Leon [Pryce] will be using what should be a very hard game to give the lads a challenging hit-out as we begin to hit our pre-season straps.”

Huddersfield have gone up against Workington for the past two seasons, with Town winning 40-10 last year at Derwent Park against a Giants side with three members of their first team squad in action.

Town will provide the second game of Huddersfield’s pre-season. They first face Bradford and lastly make the trip to Wakefield.
