Workington Town have signed former Super League star Danny Tickle in a major coup for the club.

Tickle made 26 appearances for top-flight side Hull Kingston Rovers last season, scoring four tries and kicking 31 goals, but he has elected to join Town coach Leon Pryce’s squad in League One as the west Cumbrians look to make another push for promotion to the Championship.

The 35-year-old has enjoyed a long career at the top of the game, making more than 400 appearances, and his arrival at Derwent Park will be seen as a coup and proof of Pryce’s pulling power.

The Town boss said: "Danny is a fantastic addition to the squad.

"He has many years’ experience in Super League and is a top professional.

"Playing at the highest level will be of benefit to the squad in what is a tough league.

"He’s joining a really strong pack so I’m really looking forward to seeing how they go this season."

Noted for his goal-kicking skills, Tickle has played in the Super League for Halifax, Wigan Warriors, Hull FC, Widnes Vikings, Castleford Tigers and Leigh Centurions.

Last season, he helped Hull KR stay in the division, but despite an impressive campaign for the Robins, he left the club at the end of the season.

That opened the door for Town to make an ambitious move to bring in the veteran star, who will bring a wealth of experience to the ranks as Workington look to bounce back from falling just short against Bradford Bulls and Swinton Lions last season.

Tickle said: "Since finishing with Hull KR, I’ve had a bit of time out with my family to think about my next move.

"After many years playing full-time rugby league, I decided it was time to transition into a part-time environment.

"My body still feels good and I train every day at the gym so I’m in good shape for the start of the season.

"I’ve played on the east and west side of the country in my career, so the thought of playing up in west Cumbria and in a part-time environment with a different challenge attracted me.

"It’s a tough league and the coach and board have set some clear goals, so I’m joining an ambitious club that went very close to promotion last season.

"I know Penky [Sean Penkywicz] and Ollie [Wilkes] and, of course, Leon so I’d already heard the craic is good.

"I’m joining a fairly established and experienced team but, hopefully, some of my knowledge and experience will rub off if needed.

"Training is already intense and I’m really looking forward to the new season."
