Workington Reds crashed out of the FA Trophy after a 2-0 first-round replay defeat at Ramsbottom United last night.

The game was held up for more than half-an-hour after a serious injury to Ramsbottom’s Nialle Rodney.

Reds had to make two changes for the replay with Kieran Maguire unable to get off work and Jordan Holt dropping to the bench.

Brad Hubbold and Sam Joel both started against a Ramsbottom side which made one change from Saturday with Khalil Osi-Efa replacing Simon Woodford in defence.

Reds had the first opportunity after a mistake by home skipper Tom Kennedy and Conor Tinnion’s shot was scooped away by diving keeper Sam Ashton.

The home side went close when Nik Evangelinos cut in from the left and his well-struck shot was turned over by Aaron Taylor.

Evangelinos should have opened the scoring on 16 minutes when he got on the end of an Eddie Moran cross but headed just over.

Reds went close on 23 minutes when Scott Allison set up Joel with a clever ball and his first time shot came off the foot of the post.

Reds then earned a corner which was cleared to Tinnion just outside the area and a rocket volley was on its way to the net when it struck a defender.

Jason Walker hit one from the edge of the area which was pouched by Ashton on 35 minutes but the half closed without any further opportunities for either side.

Early in the second half, afoul by Sam Smith on Nialle Rodney gave the home side a free-kick on the edge of the area but Kennedy’s effort was headed clear.

As the home side kept up their pressure Taylor did well to turn away a shot by Evangelinos but on 58 minutes the Rams scored. Jerome appealed for a penalty when he went down in the box but he got up and held off some strong tackles to score from a narrow angle.

Workington should have been level nine minutes later when Joel did well to pull the ball back and from six yards Allison fired over the bar.

It was end-to-end and after Allison almost got through the hosts broke and the dangerous Evangelinos curled a shot just wide.

Ramsbottom doubled their lead on 74 minutes when a Smith tackle on Rodney saw the ball rebound to Evangelinos who fired in a great shot past Taylor.

Reds responded by replacing Hubbold with Sean Paterson but it was Ramsbottom dominating now, growing in confidence and Tony Donaldson had Taylor diving low to hold cleanly.

Rodney was injured when he cut into the area and was stopped by a fine sliding tackle by Wordsworth, and there was a lengthy delay of more than half-an-hour while he was attended to beside the Reds’ goalposts.

Play resumed and substitute Regan Jarrett hit the bar for United, while Jason Walker clipped the bar for Reds.
