Workington Town assistant coach Craig McDowell praised his side for some good touches as they racked up half-a-century of points against a young Huddersfield Giants side.

Town picked up a 50-10 win in their second pre-season friendly and continue to build a head of steam for the new League One season starting next month.

And although the Giants side were young, Town showed what they can do in attack and defence, given the chance.

“We played some good rugby, it’s always difficult in these games when you use unlimited substitutes to keep the continuity going but I thought the team that we started with showed some good touches,” said McDowell.

“Yes there is still room for improvement but again we can only play what’s in front of us.

“When we look at it, most of their team were Under-21 and Under-19s. I know that some of them have played some Super League. But when you have men that’s played 500 games that’s rough and ready every weekend it’s hard.

“I think that was their first hit up as well and we had a warm-up against Whitehaven so our combinations are improving and they just couldn’t cope with us really.”

Coach Leon Pryce also used the game as a chance to get a look at some of the amateurs that have been training with the club.

Seaton duo Liam Williamson and Dominic Smallwood, plus Barrow Island’s Joshua Banham all got their chance and came in for praise.

“They’ve trained hard and deserved the opportunity,” added McDowell.

“We’d like to get another game in before we start the season so we can have another look at them but the future is bright for those lads.

“It is an improvement which is what we are looking for and it helps our squad. Everybody played well today.”
