IAN Evatt was delighted to see Josh Kay show exactly what he can do after the forward snatched victory for Barrow AFC at Sutton United on Saturday.

Kay pounced in the 90th minute to grab the crucial goal in a 1-0 win for the Bluebirds at Gander Green Lane, having had several other chances throughout the match.

Barrow boss Evatt was full of praise for the 21-year-old and was pleased to see him rise to the occasion when it mattered.

“The boy has just turned 21, he’s still developing physically, mentally and tactically and we have to keep working with him,” said Evatt.

“He showed against Sutton exactly what he is capable of; he terrorised their left-back with his pace.

“I would’ve throttled him if he hadn’t got the winner after the chances he had though!

“The front three today of Josh, Dior (Angus) and Jack (Hindle) were all fantastic and set the tone for the rest of the team.”

Barrow are now on a run of just one defeat in their last 13 matches, with last Saturday’s match being their fourth clean sheet since the turn of the year as well.

But there is no secret behind their recent good results, with Evatt putting it down to simply doing the hard graft at training and preparing in the right manner for every opponent.

“We’re a good team,” said Evatt. “We have a tight-knit group and we work incredibly hard on the training ground.

“There is no luck involved, it’s about hard work. We earn our own right and our own luck by working hard everyday Monday to Friday to prepare for games.

“The hard work has paid off at Sutton because as far as away performances go, that’s as good as you will see.”

Meanwhile, Evatt reserved the final word for the Barrow faithful who made the 600-mile-plus round-trip to Sutton to cheer the team on.

“Our away supporters are fantastic, all season they have been brilliant,” said Evatt. “When they back us the way they do, they give us that extra one percent and football is a game of one percents.

“When it got frustrating in the last 10 minutes they got behind us and, in the end, we got the winner we all deserved.”
