Workington Reds slipped to another home defeat to put the brakes on their Evo-Stik Premier League revival.

The sending-off of Dan Wordsworth changed the game two minutes before half-time and two second-half goals won it for Witton.

Workington were reduced to 10 men in a frantic five minutes at the end of the first half.

It had been a fairly uneventful first 40 minutes but exploded in the closing stages.

Jason Walker flicked at a shot from Conor Tinnion which was going wide and almost scored. The ball flew goalwards and full-back Matthew Devine, on the line, turned it over the bar.

From that corner by Tinnion, defender Wordsworth rose well but, from close range, headed over the bar.

Then a free-kick from Tinnion fell free in the area and as Wordsworth lunged for it he took out d defender Luke Offord at the same time.

Referee John Mulligan, who had sent-off Wordsworth on New Year’s Day, produced red again and the hosts finished the half with 10 men – and really up against it as they had played with the wind behind them in the first half.

Reds went a goal down on 72 minutes when good play down the left by Matthew Devine and James Foley resulted in a cross driven in by Billy Jones.

Reds almost drew level five minutes later when a Tinnion corner was headed by Sam Joel and McKenna produced a smart goal-line clearance.

It proved to be Reds’ last chance and, on 82 minutes, Albion skipper Matthew Gardner humped a 30-yarder past Aaron Taylor.

Reds were always up against it with 10 men against the wind and rain and missed out on the chance to get out of the bottom two for the first time in four months.
