Bransty Rangers and Wigton Harriers will represent the Smurfit Kappa County League in the semi-finals of the Cumberland Senior Cup after victories over the weekend.

The first quarter-final pitted Netherhall against Bransty Rangers with the latter having home advantage.

The game was closely contested, with only a Jamie Thursby goal for Bransty separating the teams at the turnaround.

Rangers took control in the second half with a strike from Adam Smith and three further goals from Thursby, Netherhall scoring a late consolation through Ethan Weir for 5-1.

Wigton Harriers made the journey to current Westmorland Football League leaders Keswick, for their quarter-final coming away with a creditable 1-0 win.

The weather and the playing surface were excellent for this time of the season creating perfect conditions for the contest.

The game was played at a high tempo with both teams setting out with attacking line ups.

Wigton had an early chance wasted with John Heyes blazing his chance over the bar when clear in the box. Keswick had a similar chance a couple minutes later which was well saved by Ben Gray.

Play in the first half was end to end with the match officials deserving of praise for allowing play to flow. However, neither team were able to break the deadlock resulting in a 0-0 score line at the break.

Wigton had an early chance at the start of the second period through Richard O’Keefe but his shot lacked power.

On 50 minutes Jonny Studholme, having played a one-two with his brother Ryan, found himself one-on-one with the Keswick keeper, his first shot was parried but he was on hand to net the rebound.

Following this reversal, Keswick took control and for 10 minutes had the Wigton defence under pressure going close with two headed chances before Studholme fired just wide from the edge of the box as Wigton re-asserted themselves.

Keswick missed a great opportunity to equalise when through one-on-one against the Wigton keeper Ben Gray who made an excellent save to keep his team in front.

Understandably play slowed during the last 15 minutes of the game due to the efforts exerted by both teams with Wigton ensuring they were in the draw for the semi-finals.

There were three games in the Whitehaven Cup, all staged in Carlisle.

Andy Lewis and an own goal provided Pirelli’s contribution with Andrew Bezusko and Dale Hooper replying for Borough.

Pirelli took the lead in the second half courtesy of a penalty by Jordan Pritchard-Farish with Borough almost restoring parity when a shot came back into play after striking a post.

The result was wrapped up in the final minute by Jordan Hodgson.

Carlisle City Development and Workington Reds Juniors were also in a close game which was decided in the Reds' favour by a Kyle Graham penalty.

And UniSun entertained Whitehaven Miners winning 3-0. The match was dominated more by the pitch conditions and wind than by either team. Unisun scored after 10 minutes through Craig Hay with a fine shot.

Miners had chances to equalise but the UniSun defence were resolute ensuring they went in at half time with the one goal lead.

The turnaround saw more of the same. UniSun adding a second through a penalty converted by Mike Mull and the game was settled with a third from Ryan Johnston.
