The deluge on Saturday caused all but one of the fixtures in the Smurfit Kappa County League to be postponed.

The only game to survive the elements was the Divisional Cup fixture between Whitehaven Amateurs Reserves and Bransty Rangers.

The format for this competition has been restructured this season with ties played on a two legged basis.

Amateurs used their home advantage to take a two goal lead into the second leg winning 4-2.

Whitehaven started the better of the two teams and scored after a shot by Cai Docherty was parried by the Bransty keeper only for Tom Stanaway to follow up and despatch the ball into the Bransty net.

Bransty created a few chances on the break but could not prevent Amateurs increasing their lead when Tom Stanaway added his and Amateurs’ second with a neat finish.

It seemed that Amateurs took their foot of the pedal a little after this allowing Bransty to edge their way back into the game.

They delivered a free kick into the box and following a defensive mix up, Liam O’Pray slotted the ball into the empty net to give a 2-1 half time score.

The second period saw both teams having good possession with Amateurs eventually increasing their lead through Cai Docherty.

Tom Stanaway completed his hat-trick shortly after to give Amateurs a healthy 4-1 lead.

With 15 minutes remaining on the clock Bransty gave themselves a lifeline when Jamie Thursby pulled a goal back to reduce the deficit prior to the second leg.
