New Workington Town coach Chris Thorman says it is up to the players to impress him in tomorrow’s cup clash at Hunslet.

Former Huddersfield Giants assistant Thorman took over the reins at Derwent Park on Thursday night and took his first training session with the players .

But he admitted that he has not had a lot of time to take stock of his new troops. So he is relying on some of the club’s senior players and existing coaching staff to select a side to take on Hunslet in the first round of the new 1895 Cup.

But he admitted if players want to prove their worth to him then this is their chance.

“More than anything, I am looking forward to watching them play,” said Thorman.

“If I have any points before or during the game then I will gladly share it but all I want to say to them is if they want to impress me, it is in their own interest to have a good game.

“This is regardless of whether we are in a cup competition or in the league.

“I took the session on Thursday night but I have known Ollie Wilkes for a long time, I lived with him during our Academy days.

“And I know Fuifui Moimoi from Parramatta and Danny Tickle from my time at Hull. Plus I have got to trust the staff that are already here.

“So in regards to team selection I have said that I don’t know them well enough yet.

“So I have to take a slight backward seat until I understand who the people are and what they are capable of and what they’re not capable of.”

Town have brought in Leigh Centurions hooker Declan O’Donnell on a one month loan ahead of the game to provide some cover.

And Thorman believes he will provide great cover in the number nine position, with Sean Penkywicz the only recognised hooker currently in the squad.

“He is a young up and coming hooker and this s a position we needed to strengthen in,” said Thorman.

“We only have Penky and he is a very good player at this level but it only takes one injury and we are struggling so Declan has been brought in.

“I will have a lot more input on the recruitment going forward but I will assess things next week and we will take it from there.”
