Albion will attempt to make it two wins from two when they tackle West Ham.

The Seagulls are off to a flyer after opening a league season with an away win for the 14th time in their history.

The last occasion on which they did that was 2010-11 when they went on to be League One champions.

But Graham Potter’s men and their fans will not take things for granted on their return home.

Fans can be a wary bunch, even at the best of times, and the Seagulls faithful are no exception.

Some were quick to highlight the 2002-03 season even amid the euphoria of the 3-0 win at Watford.

They recalled how newly-promoted Albion started with a 3-1 win at Burnley, then drew at home to Coventry before going into freefall and suffering relegation from the Championship.

But they still picked up a point in that second match.

Of course, they might also have mentioned the following season, when a win by the same scoreline at Oldham kicked off a promotion season in League One.

Albion have only once lost the second game after winning away in their opening fixture.

And that, ironically, was after success at Watford in 1947.

They followed a 3-2 victory at Vicarage Road in Division Three South by crashing 5-0 to QPR at the Goldstone in front of 14,228.

Albion went on to finish bottom of the table that season.

The last time they opened with two league wins was in 2006-07, when back in League One following relegation.

Alex Revell curled home the only goal at Rotherham on his debut to start the season.

Then Jake Robinson hit the winner as Gillingham were defeated by the same 1-0 scoreline at Withdean in midweek.

Albion were 2-0 up in game three before being pegged back to a 2-2 draw by Brentford.

Debut strikers Darius Henderson and Leon Knight both netted in the 2003-04 opener at Oldham.

The Argus:

Knight’s double made it two from two when QPR were seen off 2-1 at Withdean.

The two wins to start 1957-58, both of which included goals from Peter Harburn, kicked off a season which ended in title success in Division Three South.

Albion’s second game in 1953-54 was also away and saw them win 3-2 at Torquay.

The last two occasions on which Albion started with an away win – in 2008 and 2010 – they looked well set to follow it with a home success before conceding late penalties against both Bristol Rovers and Rochdale.

Clearly what happened in years gone by has no practical relevance to what we might see develop at the Amex tomorrow but it all forms part of the rich history of the club.

It is a history which goes right back to 1901 when Allbion came home for their second game of the Southern League season and enjoyed a 4-0 romp over not West Ham but West Hampstead in the Southern League.

Scottish skipper Frank McAvoy - whose time at the club ended in disgrace when he was convicted of using threatening behaviour against the team manager - scored twice.

That second successive win would not be new ground for Potter.

His Swansea team started last season with an outstanding 2-1 win at Sheffield United, then went home to beat Preston 1-0 in their second fixture.
