Workington Town’s Carl Forber has been labelled a “points machine” after he broke the club’s all-time points-scoring record after nearly 40 years.

The previous record, held by Iain MacCorquodale, was 1,800 points set by the prolific kicker between 1972 and 1980.

But that tally has been smashed by the 34-year-old, who sits on 1,813 points scored since his arrival at Derwent Park in 2007.

The record-breaking points were scored in Town’s 32-24 win at Hunslet on September 15.

Town chairman Les Smallwood said: “To beat the record set by Iain MacCorquodale is an incredible achievement in itself.

“Carl joins a long line of Town greats who were top points scorers in Iain, Ike Southward and Gus Risman.

“Carl is a points machine but that sometimes disguises what a great all-round player he is.

“He’s hard as nails and solid as a rock in attack and defence.

“As important as he is on the pitch, he’s a pleasure to have at the club as he is so professional.

“We’d like to thank him for his brilliant service to Town and thank his lovely family for their support too.”

Forber joined Town after playing for St Helens and Leigh Centurions, before going on to play for Blackpool Panthers, Oldham and Swinton Lions.

He had played the majority of his career for Workington and returned to the club for the 2013 season.

Since that return he has made 181 appearances, scored 33 tries, kicked 458 goals and added three drop goals.

Meanwhile, Town star Dec O’Donnell has been included in the Ireland train-on squad for their final European qualifiers for the 2021 Rugby League World Cup.

Ireland are in Pool A with Italy and Spain, with the top two set to progress to the competition.

O’Donnell has already signed a new deal to stay at Town next season after enjoying a successful spell on loan.
