The Cumberland Senior Cup took centre stage for teams in the Smurfit Kappa Cumberland County League at the weekend.
In an all-County League tie, Bransty Rangers, with club stalwart Eddie Holliday in goal, lost out to Workington Athletic 6-3.
Bransty scored through Michael Garroway and a brace from Stewart O’Pray but it was Athletic who progressed to the next round with strikes from Connor Hammell, Ryan Connelly and a brace each from Greg Armstrong and Greg Quayle.
There were three other ties involving County League clubs being pitted against teams from other leagues.
Gosforth had a seemingly difficult task at home to Northern League side Penrith.
However, even with an under-strength side, Gosforth fought valiantly and only went down 2-0 to their illustrious opposition.
Wigton and Aspatria were pitched against Kirkoswald and Keswick from the Westmorland League and the former were unable to benefit from home advantage as they were defeated 4-2, with their goals scored by Tom Rudd and Andy Hill.
Aspatria travelled to meet Keswick but were soundly beaten 6-1, their effort coming from Andrew Trestianu.
In the Benevolent Cup, Whitehaven Miners recorded a 4-0 victory over Mirehouse.
In a game much closer than the scoreline suggested, Miners progressed to the next round courtesy of a brace each from Lewis Park and Callum Sirkett.
In Division One, Moor Row ran table-toppers Maryport Athletic close but it was the league leaders who came out on top to claim the points with the only goal coming courtesy of a Brett McMillan strike.
