Workington manager Danny Grainger has praised skipper Brad Carroll after his all-action performance against Ossett United on Saturday.

The Reds won 2-0 courtesy of goals by Scott Allison and Dav Symington, to remain second in NPL North West Division.

Workington were dominant in the first half, but they had to roll their sleeves up while playing into a strong wind after the break.

Carroll played a key role in the heart of midfield, working tirelessly to win individual battles, and using the ball effectively to support the attack.

“The last two games he has been different class,” said Grainger. “Brad won every battle, drove forward and played the ball where he needed to. He led on the pitch throughout.”

Grainger said his captain has worked hard off the field to recover from a leg injury which restricted his opportunities early in the campaign.

“I have been harsh since I came into the club on Brad,” admitted Grainger, “I ask a lot of him despite the fact he hasn’t had a pre-season, but overall we think so much of him. Brad and all of the other lads were excellent on Saturday.”

Despite winning by a two-goal margin, Workington had goalkeeper Jim Atkinson to thank for two outstanding saves in the last 15 minutes of the game against Ossett.

The 25-year-old made a fingertip save to divert a curling shot over the bar, before coming off his line to deny visiting striker Tom Greaves as he bared down on goal.

Grainger said: “Jim is getting better every week. There is a reason why we want to keep him at the club and he will be here next season.”
