The British Night Championships took place on the Hambleton Estate near Henley-on-Thames and the club returned with two new British champions in Joe Sunley on M18 and Mike Billinghurst on M60. Daisy Rennie went one better than the Scottish Championship to take second on W14 and there were second-place finishes for Caitlin Irving on W18 and Susan Skinner on W55. Janette McHendry was third on W50S.

It has been a busy week for West Cumberland Orienteering Club members with the culmination of the club’s night series, the Scottish Night Championships and the British Championships.

The Scottish Night Championships took place in the sand dunes at Findhorn on the Moray coast and Daniel Spencer and Niamh Hunter won their respective classes, with Jamie Rennie second on M50. Daisy Rennie was third on W14 and Charlie Rennie fifth on M18.

The finale of the club series took place at Silloth Golf Club the long course overall win went to Jamie Rennie, with 3,935 points, from son Charlie Rennie who finished second but took the junior title. Simon Hunter was third; Dan Roach fourth and Mike Harrison fifth. The ladies’ competition was won by Caitlin Pearson with Karen Parker second and Lynne Thomas third as Claire Rodgers took the female junior title.

On the short course, Daisy Rennie pipped fellow junior Emma Crawford to take the overall title with 4,000 points. Bob Barnby took the senior male title, finishing third overall, and Daniel Heppell was first junior male in sixth overall. In the women’s competition, Helen Rennie led Deborah Goodwin, finishing first lady and seventh overall.

On the novice course, juniors Hiroki Holmes and Eva Humphreys took the honours.
